How a CGI Product Film Gets Made: From Brief to Delivery

From the outside, a CGI product film can look like the result of a single magic step: a product appears, lights sweep across it, liquids splash in slow motion. Behind the scenes, it is a step-by-step production process that demands no less discipline than a live shoot. Here is how a product film actually gets made inside a CGI studio, from brief to delivery.

Brief and pre-production

Everything starts with a clear brief: the film's purpose, target platforms, duration, formats and the brand's visual world. References are gathered, a moodboard is built and the tone is agreed. Then comes the storyboard and a simple animatic — camera angles, scene lengths and pacing get approved before a single frame is rendered. That order is deliberate: in CGI, the most expensive mistake is the one discovered late.

On the product side, the most valuable material is technical data from the brand. CAD files, packaging artwork, Pantone codes and, ideally, a physical sample. The more complete these are, the more faithful the digital product will be to the real one.

Modeling and look development

The first technical step is 3D modeling. The product is rebuilt digitally with millimetre accuracy, working from CAD data or reference photography. Every detail gets modeled, down to the thread of a cap — because the moment the camera moves close, missing detail gives itself away.

Next comes look development, or look-dev: the stage where surfaces are defined. How transparent is the glass, how brushed is the metal, how does the label stock scatter light? Materials and shaders are refined through test renders and presented for brand approval. Good look-dev is the threshold that decides whether a film reads as photoreal or as a video game cutscene.

Lighting, animation and rendering

Lighting on a digital set follows the same logic as a physical studio: key, fill, rim. The difference is control — you can lock the sun at any angle you want and remove unwanted reflections one by one. Camera animation is finalised here too; in product films, the camera language often defines the character of the whole piece.

Dynamic elements — liquids, cloth, smoke, particles — are solved in a separate simulation pass. Once everything is approved, the film enters the render queue. Rendering is computed frame by frame and is the most compute-hungry stage of the project; hundreds of processor hours for a 30-second film is normal. This is why pre-render approvals are taken seriously: an error that enters the queue comes out of the queue as an error.

Post-production and delivery

Rendered layers are assembled in compositing: colour passes are balanced, depth and glow effects are added, and live-action plates are integrated where needed. The grade gives the film its final texture, while sound design and music add the layer of quality viewers feel without noticing.

Delivery is never a single file. The same film is exported as a 16:9 master, 9:16 for Reels and TikTok, 1:1 for feed and, when needed, large-screen formats, in several durations. In a well-planned process these variations are designed from the start; formats left for the end always cause trouble.

The overall timeline depends on complexity, but three to six weeks is a realistic range for a typical product film.
