For a shopping mall, CGI and FOOH turn the building's façade, atrium or shopfronts into a surreal, seasonal scene, delivered as short films for social media. What brings people to a mall is rarely the sale announcement itself; more often it's a single image they want to share. In this article we look at which occasions suit a mall campaign, which illusion formats work, and how malls can build campaigns together with their retail brands, using real work as examples.
For what FOOH is, where the budget goes and which formats we deliver, see our FOOH ad production page. Here the focus is on what shopping malls specifically need.
What do CGI and FOOH do for a shopping mall?
CGI and FOOH take a mall from being just another venue to being a place people talk about. Mall communication runs on a calendar: New Year decorations, Valentine's Day, holidays, sale seasons. When those messages arrive every year with similar visuals, they disappear in the feed. An illusion that puts the building itself at the centre of the idea stands out, both on the mall's own social accounts and in what visitors share.
Three concrete benefits stand out:
- The venue becomes the hero. A familiar façade, dome, atrium or escalator draws its power from the moment the viewer thinks "I know this place".
- The seasonal message comes down to one image. Instead of a long campaign line, you build a single scene that carries the spirit of the day.
- Retail brands get a shared stage. A mall can spread a campaign's reach by producing films together with its tenant brands.
Which occasions suit a mall campaign?
Any period when footfall and shopping intent rise can carry a FOOH idea. The ones that work best are those built around a feeling or symbol everyone recognises:
- New Year and the holiday season: light, gift boxes and celebration; the most natural moment to turn a mall into a spectacle.
- Valentine's Day: romantic, playful illusions that position the venue as a place to meet.
- National and religious holidays: these call for a respectful, restrained visual language; one meaningful image rather than heavy effects.
- Mother's Day and Father's Day: high gifting intent, well suited to ideas shared with retail brands.
- Back to school and new seasons: the weeks when new collections land, good for fashion and tech-led ideas.
- Openings, relaunches and anniversaries: the right moment for an identity film that tells the mall's own story.
It helps to build the schedule backwards from the date of the occasion, leaving room for each stage: idea and approval, a shoot if needed, production, edit and delivery. We cover the general planning steps in our article on how to plan a FOOH campaign.
Which illusion formats work for malls?
The most effective FOOH formats for malls are the ones that transform the outside or the inside of the building in a way people instantly recognise. The table below sums them up by what they say and when they fit.
| Format | What it says | Best timing |
|---|---|---|
| Façade takeover | The exterior becomes a giant gift box, a light show or a themed world | New Year, openings, anniversaries |
| Atrium and interior illusion | A surreal scene appears in the common area, selling the pleasure of being inside | Valentine's Day, holidays |
| Giant product with a retail brand | A tenant brand's product grows to the scale of the mall | Collection launches, new seasons |
| Film that amplifies a physical activation | The story of a real installation in the mall is extended on social media | Launches, events |
| Seasonal series | The same visual language returns with a new scene for each occasion | All year |

How can a mall and its retail brands campaign together?
The strongest mall campaigns bring the venue and the brands inside it into the same idea. The mall provides the stage, the retail brand brings the product, and the film travels across both sides' channels. When you set up that partnership, settle these questions early:
- Whose idea is it? Is the stage the mall's, or is the product the brand's? Whose world the film lives in decides its visual language.
- How many brands will appear? One film can carry more than one brand, but every extra brand thins the message. For multi-brand campaigns, a series usually lands more clearly.
- Which accounts will publish it? You can plan different openings or end cards for the mall's and the brands' accounts.
- Will there be a physical counterpart? If there's a real installation in the mall, the film can grow its story; if not, the illusion is built to work on its own.
Examples from Clytech
Clytech is a CGI, FOOH and AI advertising studio based in Istanbul and London. We've worked with 85+ brands in more than 15 countries, and three of the pieces we've made for malls and retail brands show how the formats above come to life.
İstinyePark: New Year Spectacle
In the İstinyePark New Year Spectacle, festive illusions turn the shopping mall into a dazzling holiday scene. The idea is to wrap visitors in the season's magic through a digital show. It was made in vertical 9:16 for social media.

İstinyePark: Valentine's Day Illusion
For the same venue, the Valentine's Day illusion turns the mall into a surreal stage of love. Designed specifically for the venue, the scene was created to spark joy and celebrate the season. Together, the two films show how a mall can build a series across different occasions while keeping the same level of quality.
J.Lindeberg: a giant shoe at NK in Stockholm
J.Lindeberg installed a giant version of its new shoe at NK, Stockholm's iconic department store. To amplify that OOH activation, we produced the J.Lindeberg giant shoe film, in which drones carry the oversized shoe across the city before it arrives. It gathered over 200,000 views across Instagram, TikTok, Twitter and LinkedIn, and it's a good example of a retail brand and a store sharing one story.

What should you check when planning the campaign?
A successful mall campaign pairs the recognisability of the venue with one clear idea. This checklist helps when you put the brief together:
- Pick a recognisable spot. The façade, the entrance, the dome or the most photographed interior space; viewers should know the place in the first frame.
- Stick to one idea. Don't try to fit every symbol of the occasion into one film; one scene, one surprise.
- Protect the mall's identity. A luxury, family or youth-focused venue needs an illusion in the same tone.
- Lead with vertical. The film is watched in the social feed first; if you need a horizontal version or cuts for screens, plan them together.
- Think in series. A visual language set up at New Year can return with new scenes on Valentine's Day and the holidays.
- Plan the rollout early. Decide up front which day and which account the mall, the retail brands and any partners will post from.
Frequently asked questions
Can visitors see a mall's FOOH on site?
No. FOOH is a video made to be watched on social media, with the illusion built on real footage of the location. If you want a screen experience people can see in person, our comparison of FOOH and 3D billboards explains the difference.
Can one film feature several retail brands?
It can, as long as the idea stays single. Because the message thins with every extra brand, a series that gives each brand its own episode usually works better for multi-brand campaigns.
Which formats do you deliver?
A vertical 9:16 master for social media, a horizontal version if needed, and cuts for digital or in-store screens. We agree the formats together at the brief stage.
When should we start on a seasonal campaign?
The earlier, the easier. The complexity of the idea, whether a shoot is needed and the approval rounds set the timeline; share your brief and we'll come back within 24 hours with an approach.
Wrapping up
What turns a mall into a place people talk about on a special day is the meeting of a recognisable venue and one strong idea. From a façade takeover to a giant product shared with a retail brand, the right format depends on the mall's identity and calendar.
